Για τον Επίκουρο δεν υπάρχει αθανασία της ψυχής. Η ψυχή γεννιέται και πεθαίνει μαζί με το σώμα. Όσοι πιστεύουν ότι η ψυχή είναι ασώματη σκέπτονται ανόητα, έλεγε ο Επίκουρος. Είναι προφανές πως αν η ψυχή ήταν ασώματη δεν θα μπορούσε ούτε να κάνει κάτι αλλά ούτε και να πάθει κάτι. Δηλαδή, η ψυχή δεν είναι ούτε αϋλη ούτε αθάνατη αλλά μια διεργασία ενός ζώντος οργανισμού.

Πιο αναλυτικά, η ψυχή είναι σώμα που αποτελείται από πολύ λεπτά μέρη που είναι κατεσπαρμένα σε όλα τα μέρη του σώματος, ενώ το «λογικό» μέρος βρίσκεται στον θώρακα, όπως εκδηλώνεται με τους φόβους και τη χαρά. Ένας μάλιστα σύγχρονος αμερικανός συγγραφέας ο Έρικ Άντερσον μελετητής του Επίκουρου σε ένα από τα βιβλία του «Ο Επίκουρος στον 21^ο αιώνα» αναφέρει ότι οι σύγχρονοι ανατόμοι παραδέχονται την ύπαρξη των ελαφρών στοιχείων διασκορπισμένα σε όλο το ανθρώπινο σώμα, σε διάφορες μορφές (ηλεκτρόνια, ιόντα, διάφοροι χημικοί παράγοντες) τα οποία καλούνται νευρομεταβιβαστές και διατρέχουν το κεντρικό νευρικό σύστημα και ότι τα στοιχεία αυτά αναγνωρίζονται από την επιστήμη ως πραγματικές έδρες εκείνων που οι επικούρειοι ονόμαζαν αντίστοιχα «νους» και «ψυχή»».

Για το φόβο του θανάτου ο Επίκουρος λέει: «Ο σοφός ούτε παρακαλεί να ζει ούτε φοβάται να μη ζει, επειδή ούτε έχει σφοδρή επιθυμία να ζει ούτε πιστεύει ότι είναι κακό να μη ζει», λέει ο Επίκουρος.

Κατά τον Yalom, η μεγαλοφυΐα του Επίκουρου πρόλαβε τη σύγχρονη άπψη για το ασυνείδητο: ο Επίκουρος τόνιζε ότι οι ανησυχίες μας για τον θάνατο δεν είναι συνειδητές, αλλά μπορούμενα τις συναγάγουμε από μεταμφιεσμένες εκδηλώσεις, όπως, για παράδειγμα, την ακραία θρησκευτικότητα, την ολοκληρωτική ανάλωση και συνγκέντρωση πλούτου και την τυφλή αρπακτικότητα για εξουσία και τιμές, πράγματα που προσφέρουν μια επίπλαστη εκδοχή αθανασίας.

Για να αποφύγουμε τον φόβο του θανάτου η επικούρια φιλοσοφία συνιστούσε το τετραφάρμακο που είναι: πρώτο «Θεός άφοβον», δεύτερον «Θάνατος αναίσθητον», τρίτον "το αγαθόν εύκτητονκαι και τέταρτον «το κακόν ευεκκαρτέρητον».

Το πρώτο φάρμακο είναι «Θεός άφοβον». Οι θεοί δεν είναι μπαμπούλες, ούτε ανακατεύονται στα ανθρώπινα ζητήματα, κατά τον Επίκουρο. Πολλοί που πιστεύουν στην αθανασία της ψυχής και ότι αυτή θα πληρώνει στην αιωνιότητα για τις ανομίες μας που κάναμε στη διάρκεια της ζωής, λες και ευθύνεται μόνον αυτή και όχι και το σώμα που έγινε κοπριά, όπως λέει ο Ηράκλειτος, επιτρέψτε μου να πω πως δεν είναι σοβαροί άνθρωποι κατά τον Επίκουρο.

Μπροστά στην ισχυρή τους άποψη πως είναι αιώνιοι δέχονται να υπάρχουν αιώνια ακόμα και αν βασανίζονται. Αφού δεν πιστεύουν σε καμιά άλλη ζωή μετά θάνατο δεν έχουν και φοβούνται τίποτα απολύτως.

Το δεύτερο φάρμακο είναι «Θάνατος αναίσθητον», δηλαδή, όταν πεθάνω εγώ δεν θα υπάρχει καμιά αίσθηση. Ένας αιώνιος ύπνος χωρίς όνειρα.

Ο ισχυρισμός αυτός επιβεβαώνεται και από τη ρήση του Επίκουρου που είναι πιο γνωστή και εντυπωσιακή "Όταν εγώ ζω ο θάνατος δεν είναι εδώ, ενώ όταν εγώ δεν θα ζω δεν θα είμαι εγώ εκεί γιατί θα είμαι νεκρός".

Το τρίτο φάρμακο είναι «Και το αγαθόν εύκτητον». Από μας εξαρτάται αποκλειστικά να είμαστε ευτυχισμένοι και χαρούμενοι.

Το τέταρτο φάρμακο είναι και το "κακό ευεκκαρτέρητον». Δηλαδή, πρέπει να υπομένουμε και το κακό αφού αυτό συνυπάρχει με το καλό.

Ο θάνατος δεν είναι κάτι φοβερό, γιατί τότε θα ήταν και για τον Σωκράτη. Τον θάνατο τον κάνει φοβερό η ιδέα ότι είναι φοβερός.

Πλούταρχος

Πένθησε με μέτρο τους γνωστούς σου. Γιατί δεν έχουν πεθάνει, αλλά τον ίδιο δρόμο που όλοι αναγκαστικά θα περάσουμε, αυτοί τον πήραν πρώτοι.
