Ο Φρόυντ λέει, ότι ο άνθρωπος ζει σαν να μην πρόκειται να πεθάνει ποτέ, κι αυτό οφείλεται στο γεγονός ότι μέσα του κουβαλάει τον αρχέγονο άνθρωπο που πίστευε στη δική του αθανασία. Ο πρωτόγονος άνθρωπος δεν πίστευε στον δικό του θάνατο. Έτσι κι εμείς σήμερα  ζούμε σαν να μην πιστεύουμε ότι θα πεθάνουμε.

Κατά τον Φρόυντ, ο καθένας μας χρωστάει στη φύση έναν θάνατο και πρέπει να είναι προετοιμασμένος να εξοφλήσει αυτό το χρέος, με λίγα λόγια ο θάνατος είναι φυσικός, αναμφισβήτητος και αναπόφευκτος.

Κατά τον Φρόϋντ, η μόνη σωτηρία για τον άνθρωπο για να απαλυνθεί από όλες αυτές τις φοβίες και τα άγχη είναι η μυθοπλασία, δηλαδή οι Τέχνες και ιδιαίτερα το θέατρο. Εκεί βρίσκουμε ανθρώπους που ξέρουν να πεθαίνουν, ακόμα και τέτοιους που καταφέρνουν να σκοτώσουν έναν άλλον. Μόνον εκεί εκπληρώνεται για μας η προϋπόθεση υπό την οποία θα μπορούσαμε να συμφιλιωθούμε με τον θάνατο, αν δηλαδή παρόλες τις μεταπτώσεις της ζωής η δική μας ζωή παρέμενε ανέπαφη.

Στο πεδίο της μυθοπλασίας βρίσκουμε εκείνο το περίσσευμα ζωής που χρειαζόμαστε. Πεθαίνουμε ταυτιζόμενοι με έναν ήρωα παραταύτα όμως επιζούμε και είμαστε έτοιμοι, και για δεύτερη και τρίτη φορά πάλι χωρίς ζημιά, να πεθάνουμε μαζί με άλλους ήρωες.

Δεν υπάρχει παρηγοριά στον πόνο και τον καημό του θανάτου. Στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα παράληλα με τις φιλοσοφικές τους θεωρίες άρχισαν να αναδύονται πεσιμιστικά ρεύματα. Κάποτε αυτός ο πεσιμισμός έφτασε στα άκρα. Αλλά δεν τον επέτρεψαν να γίνει μηδενιστικός. Έφτιαξαν την αιώνια τέχνη. Ο Ορφέας με τη μουσική του, τραγωδίες, αρχιτεκτονική, γλυπτική, ποιήματα, ελεγείες, ραψωδίες. Έτσι παρηγορούνταν με ψεύτικα παραμύθια για τη μετά θάνατο ζωή. Ο πόνος και αυτή η διαλεκτική σχέση με τον θάνατο είχε σαν αποτέλεσμα να δημιουργηθούν αυτά τα μεγαλεία. Το θέατρο της Επιδαύρου κτίστηκε για τους αρρώστους των ιατρικών κλινικών που υπήρχαν δίπλα στο θέατρο. Η τέχνη του παραμυθιού είναι αυτή που γεφυρώνει το όνειρο με την πραγματικότητα, τον άνθρωπο με τη φύση και τελικά τη ζωή με τον θάνατο.

 


Επίκτητος

Ο θάνατος δεν είναι κάτι φοβερό, γιατί τότε θα ήταν και για τον Σωκράτη. Τον θάνατο τον κάνει φοβερό η ιδέα ότι είναι φοβερός.


Πλούταρχος

Πένθησε με μέτρο τους γνωστούς σου. Γιατί δεν έχουν πεθάνει, αλλά τον ίδιο δρόμο που όλοι αναγκαστικά θα περάσουμε, αυτοί τον πήραν πρώτοι.


Θαλής ο Μιλήσιος

Τίποτα δεν διαφέρει ο θάνατος από τη ζωή.

Η ζωή και ο θάνατος συγχωνεύονται και δεν υπάρχει καμιά εξέλιξη ούτε προορισμός, υπάρχει μόνο το ΕΙΝΑΙ.

Πεθαίνοντας θα προσφέρω στους ανθρώπους τα πιο πλούσια δώρα μου. Αυτό έμαθα απ' τον ήλιο, που όταν δύει είναι τόσο λαμπρός και με τους ανεξάντλητους θησαυρούς του βυθίζεται στη θάλασσα, έτσι που κάνει τον φτωχό ψαρά να κωπηλατεί με χρυσωμένα κουπιά.
