Ο Ηράκλειτος είναι ένας εκπρόσωπος της λεγόμενης προσωκρατικής φιλοσοφίας, η οποία δημιουργήθηκε στις ελληνικές αποικίες στα παράλια της Μικράς Ασίας και σηματοδότησε τη γέννηση της φιλοσοφίας ως επιστήμης. Η καινοτόμος σκέψη τους, σε συνδυασμό πάντα με άλλους κοινωνικο-οικονομικούς, γεωγραφικούς και πολιτικούς παράγοντες, συνέβαλε στην περαιτέρω αξιοσημείωτη στοχαστική ανάπτυξη στους χρόνους της κλασικής εποχής στο χώρο των αρχαιοελληνικών πόλεων-κρατών, κατά την οποία τέθηκαν τα θεμέλια της επιστημονικής σκέψης και μεθόδου, παράλληλα με τις άλλες, διαχρονικής αξίας κατακτήσεις σε διάφορους άλλους τομείς του πολιτισμού. Κατακτήσεις διϊστορικής σημασίας, οι οποίες, μαζί με εκείνες άλλων λαών, έχουν ασκήσει καταλυτική επίδραση στην εξέλιξη της ανθρώπινης σκέψης, των ιδεών και του πολιτισμού.
Κατά την αποτίμηση της μοναδικής συμβολής των διαφόρων πολιτισμών στην παγκόσμια ιστορία χρειάζεται να λαμβάνουμε υπόψη ότι δεν υπάρχει παρθενογένεση στα ιδεολογικά οικοδομήματα μιας δεδομένης εποχής, (επομένως κάποια διάχυτα σπέρματα φιλοσοφικής σκέψης προϋπήρχαν ήδη στον κόσμο των Ελλήνων φιλοσόφων κατά το συγκεκριμένο τόπο και χρόνο) επομένως, η καινοτόμος σκέψη των φιλοσόφων αυτών δεν εμφανίστηκε από το πουθενά, αλλά βασίστηκε σε μία υφιστάμενη προϊστορία συστημάτων φιλοσοφικής σκέψης, έστω και με τη μορφή της θρησκευτικής μυθοπλασίας, που κατασκευάστηκε και μεταφράστηκε σε κοινωνική πρακτική σε διάφορες περιοχές της Ασίας, της Μεσοποταμίας και της Αιγύπτου διαγράφοντας μία εξέλιξη πολλών εκατοντάδων ετών, πριν από την κλασσική εποχή.
Κατά την εξέταση αυτής της εξέλιξης, η ιστορική μελέτη συνήθως προσπαθεί να χαράξει ορόσημα ιστορικής καμπής, ορόσημα δηλαδή κατά τα οποία παρατηρείται μία στροφή στις νοοτροπίες των κοσμοθεωριών, μία υπέρβαση κατεστημένης παράδοσης, μία τομή, μία αλλαγή στον τρόπο σκέψης, που άλλοτε ανταποκρίνεται σε νέες ανάγκες των ανθρώπων και άλλοτε συναντά μικρού ή μεγάλου βαθμού αντίδραση από την ευρεία κοινότητα των εμπνευστών τους. Έτσι μπορούμε να τοποθετήσουμε τόσο τους προσωκρατικούς γενικά, όσο και τον Ηράκλειτο ειδικότερα, σε ένα ορόσημο κατά το οποίο χτίζεται όχι μόνο ένα ακόμη σκαλοπάτι στην ιστορία της σκέψης, αλλά ένα άλμα που συντελείται στην εξέλιξή της με την απελευθέρωση της νόησης του σκεπτόμενου ατόμου-πολίτη μίας σχετικά ελεύθερης κοινότητας από το ασφυκτικό περίβλημα και τις αγκυλώσεις των μύθων της θρησκείας, της μαγείας και των κάθε λογής προληπτικών γνωστικών οικοδομημάτων ενός παρελθόντος πολλών χιλιετιών, που ακόμη και σήμερα όχι μόνον δεν έχουν εκλείψει, αλλά και συχνά κυριαρχούν στα ευρύτερα στρώματα των κοινωνιών μας. Την προσωκρατική αυτή περίοδο ο ιστορικός Erik Vogelin καλεί «Μεγάλο Άλμα του Όντος» ο δε Karl Jaspers “Αξονική Περίοδο»[1].
Μία παρατήρηση που μπορεί να γίνει εδώ, έχει επίσης να κάνει με τη διαμόρφωση της φιλοσοφικής σκέψης από ηγετικές φυσιογνωμίες των κοινωνιών κάθε εποχής – τους πνευματικούς/θρησκευτικούς ηγέτες ή τους «διανοούμενούς» της, που επινοούσαν σχετικά προχωρημένα διανοητικά σχήματα, ανεξάρτητα από το αν εισακούονταν ή όχι από μεγάλο ποσοστό του κοινωνικού συνόλου στο οποίο ανήκαν ή απευθύνονταν.. Από την άποψη αυτή, ακόμη και αν δεν δεχόμασταν την ιστορική ανακάλυψη των Κ. Μαρξ και Μ. Βέμπερ σχετικά με την νομοτελειακή πρωταρχικότητα των υλικών συνθηκών σε μία κοινωνία έναντι των ιδεολογικών και πολιτικών, είναι πλέον γενικότερα παραδεκτό ότι οι ιδέες και οι πνευματικές κατακτήσεις δεδομένων κοινωνικών συστημάτων, ακόμη και αν δεχθούμε ότι έχουν δική τους, σημαντική δυναμική, δεν ακολουθούν εντούτοις μία εντελώς αυτόνομη πορεία, ανεξάρτητη δηλαδή από το πλαίσιο των «υλικών», οικομικο-τεχνολογικών, κοινωνικών και γεωπολιτικών συνθηκών εντός του οποίου οι ιδέες αυτές αναπτύσσονται [ΠΑΡΑΠΟΜΠΗ]: ένας Περικλής δεν είναι πολύ πιθανό να εμφανιστεί και να ανθίσει στην εποχή των Φαραώ της Αιγύπτου, ούτε ένας Ιουστινιανός στην αρχαία Αθήνα, ενώ στις μέρες μας, όλων των ειδών οι ηγετικές «πνευματικές» φυσιογνωμίες μπορεί να εμφανίζονται πλάι – πλάι, σε μια εποχή άκρως παγκοσμοποιημένη, με τις τεράστιες πολλαπλότητες, τις ανισότητες και τις αντιφάσεις ενός πολυ-κατακερματισμένου και πολύχρωμου μωσαϊκού οικονομιών και ιδεολογιών να αποτελούν το κυρίαρχο γνώρισμά της. Πρόκειται δηλαδή για μία πρωτοφανούς έκτασης παγκοσμιοποίησης (διότι μικρο-«παγκοσμιοποιήσεις» επιχειρήθηκαν και στο παρελθόν) της οποίας όμως η επίπλαστη ιδέα της ολότητας είναι άκρως σαθρή.
Έχοντας αναγνωρίσει τους παραπάνω όρους του φαινομένου, αυτό μας βοηθά στο να μείνουμε μακριά από ορισμένες σωβινιστικές εξάρσεις και υπερβολές, συγχρόνως όμως αναγνωρίζουμε την αξία της συμβολής του αρχαιοελληνικού πολιτισμού, χωρίς να οδηγούμαστε σε όψιμες εθνοκεντρικές κραυγές σύγχρονων ερευνητών [ΠΑΡΑΠΟΜΠΗ] που αμφισβητούν την αξία αυτή προβάλλοντας ορισμένες αβάσιμες κατηγορίες περί «κλοπής της πρωτοτυπίας των ιδεών» από τους αρχαίους Έλληνες, ή περί της «άδικης» ή λανθασμένης υπερίσχυσης της αρχαιοελληνικής επιρροής στη διαμόρφωση της μετέπειτα δυτικής σκέψης και γραμματείας, σε βάρος της Αιγυπτιακής, ή άλλων ασιατικών πολιτισμών. Όπως θα δούμε και πιο κάτω, κάτι τέτοιο δεν ευσταθεί, οπότε θα προσεγγίσουμε τα πράγματα μέσα από μία σύγχρονη, συνθετική και διαλεκτική οπτική.
Επιστροφή στον Ηράκλειτο
Ο λόγος που επικεντρωνόμαστε στον Ηράκλειτο, επιχειρώντας να τον δούμε από μία ακόμη διαφορετική ματιά, είναι επειδή, όχι μόνον η θεωρία του στο σύνολό της αποδείχθηκε διαχρονικής αξίας, αλλά και επειδή είναι ίσως ο μόνος αρχαίος φιλόσοφος, που ξεπέρασε την εποχή του, επηρέασε διαχρονικά και με διαφορετικούς τρόπους τη διαμόρφωση κοσμολογικών, επιστημονικών, πολιτικών, ηθικών και αισθητικών ιδεών και θεωριών σε όλες σχεδόν τις εποχές, ενώ στην εποχή μας επιστρέφει δικαιωμένος και πάντα επίκαιρος, αποσπώντας τον θαυμασμό μεγάλων – και διαφορετικών τοποθετήσεων – επιστημόνων.
Είναι φυσικό να διερωτηθεί κανείς πώς είναι δυνατόν να συγκρίνει κανείς ένα φιλοσοφικό λόγο και σύστημα εννοιών σε ένα τόσο γενικό επίπεδο, όπως αυτό της προσωκρατικής φιλοσοφίας, όσο επαναστατική και αν ήταν για την εποχή της, με τα τόσο αφηρημένα, βαθιά επεξεργασμένα, πειραματικά ελεγμένα και εξαιρετικά μαθηματικοποιημένα θεωρητικά τους μοντέλα, σε βαθμό μάλιστα, που είναι απρόσιτα στο ευρύ κοινό. Με αυτά τα δεδομένα, ορισμένοι οπαδοί του νεωτερισμού[2] είναι δυνατόν να διατυπώσουν επιφυλάξεις και να αναρωτηθούν, για παράδειγμα, σε τι συνεισέφερε ο λόγος του Ηράκλειτου στην παγκόσμια συλλογική επιστημονική γνώση, για παράδειγμα στον τομέα της σύγχρονης Φυσικής, που με την μελέτη και έρευνα αναζητά απαντήσεις στις βασικές ερωτήσεις που έδωσαν αιώνες πριν στον προσωκρατικό αυτό φιλόσοφο το κίνητρο να δημιουργήσει τη δική του, κριτική και ολοκληρωμένη, θεωρία.
Η προσδοκία της καμπής εδώ και μισό αιώνα δεν αφορά πλέον μόνο στη σχολαστική και αποτελεσματική ανάλυση των δεδομένων της πραγματικότητας ή ακόμη και την εφεύρεση τεχνικών ελέγχου και επιστημονικών μεθοδολογιών με την θετικιστική έννοια, σε πολλές επιστήμες αιχμής του 20ού αιώνα, όπως είναι η Φιλοσοφία, η Φυσική, τα Μαθηματικά, οι Τεχνολογίες, η Πληροφορική, η Οικονομία και Πολιτική, η Οικολογία κ.ά. Αφορά κυρίως στον τρόπο σκέψης, σε ένα διαφορετικό τρόπο σκέψης, που θα υπερβαίνει τα κλασικά νοητικά οικοδομήματα και θα στρέψει την προσοχή και την συλλογική επιστημονική θεώρηση των πραγμάτων σε κατευθύνσεις περισσότερο ολιστικές, συνθετικές και καινοτόμες θεωρήσεις της πραγματικότητας. Στην εποχή της δημιουργίας τους, οι προσεγγίσεις αυτές είχαν και οι ίδιες δώσει νέα ώθηση ιστορικής σημασίας για τη νεωτερική θεμελίωση και την πρόοδο όλων των τομέων της επιστήμης και της τεχνολογίας, χάρις στην ανάπτυξη της ορθολογικής και της βαθιά αναστοχαστικής, εμπειρικής σκέψης. Από τα μέσα του περασμένου αιώνα όμως και παράλληλα με την επαναφορά του Ηρακλείτειου λόγου στο προσκήνιο, η σκέψη της φιλοσοφίας, των θετικών και ανθρωπιστικών επιστημών καθώς και των τεχνών έχει κάνει ένα άλμα στον τρόπο θεώρησης της πραγματικότητας καταλήγοντας σε συμπεράσματα που δικαιώνουν τον μεγάλο φιλόσοφο, και ακόμα αναζητά νέα μοντέλα, που θα βοηθήσουν στην υπέρβαση της περιχαράκωσης του νου από τις ισχύουσες ιδέες/θεωρίες του θετικισμού, πού ό,τι είχαν να δώσουν μέχρι τώρα το έδωσαν και προσδοκούν τουλάχιστον μία ενδεχόμενη ανανέωσή τους.
