Ο Ηλίας Καφαντάρης ή καπετάν Αδαμάντιος γεννήθηκε το 1915 και απεβίωσε το 1979.

Μετά τη νικηφόρο μάχη της οποίας ήταν ο ιθύνων νους εξαφανίστηκε και εμφανίστηκε το 1948 και παραδόθηκε στις αρχές.

Παρέμεινε στις φυλακές Τρικάλων μέχρι που να εκδικαστεί η υπόθεσή του. Στη συνέχεια εξορίστηκε και φυλακίστηκε στον Αη Στράτη για 5 χρόνια. Δεν γνωρίζω λεπτομέρειες γιατί απεύφευγε να μιλάει για τον εαυτό του ακόμα και στα μέλη της οικογένειάς του.

Μετά την αποφυλάκιση παντρεύτηκε το 1954 τη Μαρούσα την οποία είχα την τιμή να γνωρίσω και να την επισκέπτομαι στα γεράματά της. Στην ερώτησή μου αν ήξερε κάτι για τη μάχη της Μερίτσας μου απήντησε ότι αρνούνταν να μιλήσει για την περίοδο εκείνη της ζωής του.

Με τη Μαρούσα απέκτησε δυο κορίτσια τη Λένα και τη Λίλα Καφαντάρη τη γνωστή ηθοποιό.

Συνάντησα τον κ. Καφαντάρη το 1961 στο εμπορικό κατάστημα υφασμάτων που είχε στην Ερμού 73. Μου έδινε δέματα για να τα μεταφέρω σε πρακτορεία μεταφορών για την Επαρχία.

Σε μια συνάντηση που είχαμε μαζί του με τον Πατέρα μου με τον οποίο συνδεόταν με πολλή φιλία τον ρώτησα να μου πει λίγα πράγματα για τη Μάχη.

Την περίοδο εκείνη όποιος μιλούσε για τη μάχη αυτή θεωρούνταν κομμουνιστής. Μου έκανε εντύπωση η απάντησή του:

- Να μην σε απασχολούν αυτές οι υποθέσεις. Κάθησε στα αυγά σου γιατί σε λίγο θα μπεις στο Πανεπιστήμιο και δεν φτάνει που είσαι παιδί του Πατέρα σου αλλά αν μάθουν που σε απασχολούν τέτοιες υποθέσεις δεν σε βλέπω καλά.

Τότε βρήκε την ευκαιρία να του πει ο Πατέρας μου για το που κρυβόταν από το 1943 μέχρι το 1948. Πρέπει να ήσουν καλόγερος σε κανένα μοναστήρι, είπε ο Πατέρας μου. Και ο Ηλίας απάντησε: Βρε Μήτσιο φαντασία που την έχεις. Κι εκεί έκλεισε η συζήτηση.

Ο κ. Καφαντάρης μου έδωσε την εντύπωση ενός ευφυούς ανθρώπου και με έντονη δημοκρατική συνείδηση. Ήταν αριστερός στο φρόνημα αλλά και στις πράξεις του. Δεν ανήκε στο ΚΚΕ αυτό ήταν ξεκάθαρο. Όταν πέτυχα στη Γεωπονική και δεν είχα να πληρώσω τα δίδακτρα, τα οποία ήταν 2,550 δρχ. πολλά για την τσέπη μου, πρωτοστάτησε να βοηθήσει τον Πατέρα μου να μαζευτεί αυτό το ποσό. Παρακολουθούσε την εξέλιξή μου και ήταν πολύ ευτυχής για την πρόοδό μου.

Διατηρώ μια αδελφική φιλία με την κόρη του, τη Λίλα Καφαντάρη, τη γνωστή ηθοποιό, η οποία κληρονόμησε τις κοινωνικές ευαισθησίες από τον πατέρα της . Η Λίλα ανήκει στην Αριστερά, είναι στέλεχος του Κ.Κ.Ε και αγωνίζεται για τα ιδεώδη της ανθρωπιάς και της κοινωνικής δικαιοσύνης.

Αριστείδης Μπλούτσος

Ευτυχώς δε ουδείς εκ των Ιταλών ομήρων έπαθεν ουδέν. Τους αιχμαλώτους υγιείς ή τραυματίας κατευθύναμεν προς το χωρίον και τους συνεκεντριωσαμεν εντός τον σχολείου, όπου τους παρεσχέθη θερμόν ρόφημα, φαγητόν και περίθαλψις υγειονομική εις τους τραυματίας χρησιμοποιηθέντων προς τούτο του Ιατρού και των νοσοκόμων τον τάγματος.

Βασίλης Παπαδήμας

Ο παπάς του χωριού Πούλιος Αθανάσιος βγάζει το πετραχήλι, φιλά ευλαβικά το Ευαγγέλιο, αφήνει το δισκοπότηρο, αρπάζει το ντουφέκι, κάνει την προσευχή του και τρέχει ρασοφορεμένος να προλάβει.Για τούτο οι αιχμάλωτοι Ιταλοί λέγανε: «πολλοί παπάδες παρτιζάνοι αφού υπήρχαν και πολλοί γενειοφόροι».

Στις 11 το πρωί ο Αδαμάντιος που γνώριζε ιταλικά μίλησε στους αιχμάλωτους μαζί με το Μαχιά και τους ανακοινώθηκε πως οι Έλληνες ξέρουν και να τιμωρούν και επειδή γνωρίζουν ότι η μεγαλύτερη τιμωρία είναι να συγχωράς τους αντιπάλους, αυτό κάναμε και εμείς οι αντάρτες ελευθερωτές της πατρίδας μας.Την ίδια μέρα άνδρες των δεκαρχιών συνόδευσαν τους αιχμαλώτους μέχρι το Μουργκάνι για να επιστρέψουν στην Καλαμπάκα.

Στέργιος Γιαννούλας

Επί 39 χρόνια αν έλεγες ότι συμμετείχες σε αυτή τη μάχη εθεωρείσο ότι ήσουν EAMOΒούλγαρος, ανθέλληνας και εναντίον του έθνους.

Μιχάλης Κοσβύρας

Πήγαμε και εμείς από το χωριό μας, περίπου δεκαπέντε νέοι, με ό,τι όπλο μπορούσε ο καθένας να εξοικονομήσει και με μόνο πεντ'-έξι σφαίρες, γιατί τα όπλα δεν ήταν όλα του ιδίου τύπου μαλιχέρ, μαουζέρ κ.ά.
