…..Για μένα ήταν μια ξεχωριστή φυσιογνωμία ο Μπαρμπαλιάς. Ήρεμος, άκακος, με ένα μόνιμο χαμόγελο, που είχε φωλιάσει ανάμεσα στα πολύ μεγάλα μουστάκια του. Ήταν αργός στη περπατησιά για να είναι σίγουρος για το επόμενο βήμα και να βρίσκεται σε αρμονία με το βαθυστόχαστο βλέμμα του.
Πρέπει να είχε και ταλέντο ηθοποιού, γιατί, όταν έλεγε κάτι, το έλεγε με παραστατικότητα και πειστικό χιούμορ. Πιθανόν για το λόγο αυτό φαίνεται ότι επιλέχτηκε από τον καπετάν Αδαμάντιο (Ηλία Καφαντάρη) να υποδυθεί στη μάχη της Μερίτσας το σύγχρονο εφιάλτη, να προσποιηθεί τον πληροφοριοδότη που γνώριζε τον κρυψώνα όπου οι κάτοικοι των χωριών είχαν κρυμμένη τη σοδειά τους, τα τρόφιμα και το κρασί, αλλά και το κρυφό μονοπάτι που θα τους οδηγούσε σε αυτόν, έτσι ώστε να τον ακολουθήσουν σε ένα συγκεκριμένο μονοπάτι, κατάλληλο για να επιτεθούν οι δικοί του στους Ιταλούς στρατιώτες, πριν κάνουν την οργανωμένη επίθεσή τους στα γύρω χωριά. Υποδύθηκε θαυμάσια το ρόλο του ο Μπαρμπαλιάς και κατόρθωσε και οδήγησε 348 βαριά οπλισμένους Ιταλούς σε αχυρώνες, όπου οι κάτοικοι της Οξύνειας είχαν δήθεν κρύψει τη σοδειά τους.
Φανταζόμουν τον Μπαρμπαλιά στο ρόλο αυτό, όταν μου εξιστορούσε τη μάχη της Μερίτσας ότι μόλις μπήκε στον πρώτο αχυρώνα, προσποιήθηκε ότι εξερευνώντας το χώρο ανακάλυψε ένα βαρέλι με κρασί και άρχισε να πίνει, οπότε οι Ιταλοί άρχισαν να κάνουν το ίδιο και να πίνουν. Τους μέθυσε όλους με τον τρόπο του ο Μπαρμπαλιάς. Κατόπιν, μεθυσμένους τους οδηγούσε στην κρεμάλα τους, στο μονοπάτι όπου διεξήχθη η πρώτη μάχη της εθνικής αντίστασης, η πρώτη καταδίκη των κατακτητών, η αρχή της αντίστροφης μέτρησης για την επερχόμενη ήττα τους. Φερεντίνος λεγ όταν ο διοικητής των Ιταλών, που σ’ όλο το δρόμο τον είχε συνέχεια δίπλα του τον Μπαρμπαλιά και δεν τον άφηνε να απομακρύνεται.

Χρόνια πολλά μετά, μεγάλος πια, περίπου τη δεκαετία του 1980, πήγα και τον βρήκα λίγα χρόνια πριν πεθάνει, για να μου εξιστορήσει τα γεγονότα της περίφημης αυτής μάχης.

Ρε Μπαρμπαλιά, του λέω, εσύ είσαι ήρωας.

Τι ήρωας, μωρέ ανιψιέ, ένας χέστης είμαι. Αν όλοι οι ήρωες είναι σαν εμένα, τότε οι ήρωες θα πρέπει να είναι ή δειλοί ή αλαφροΐσκιωτοι. Όταν αποφάσισα να παραστήσω τον προδότη, δεν το σκέφτηκα και πολύ, ούτε συνειδητοποίησα τον κίνδυνο. Ήταν θαρρείς το μίσος και η αγανάκτηση για τους κατακτητές που με έκαναν να μη σκεφτώ τι θα μπορούσε να μου συμβεί; Δεν ξέρω, τι να σου πω… Όταν όμως πλησίασα το μέρος όπου ήξερα ότι θα χτυπούσαν οι συναγωνιστές μας, μαύρες σκέψεις κυρίεψαν το μυαλό μου. Σαν κοράκια ήταν αυτές οι σκέψεις. Έρχονταν κι έφευγαν σαν αστραπές. Μέσα στην υπερέντασή μου σκεφτόμουνα τα τέσσερα παιδιά μου, που θα έμεναν ορφανά, ότι εγώ δεν είχα καλοσχεδιάσει τις ενέργειές μου, πόσο επικίνδυνο ήταν αυτό που έκανα. Το μυαλό μου είχε μουδιάσει και ένα σφίξιμο ένιωθα στο λαιμό μου, τα μάτια μου θόλωσαν. Όταν πλησιάζαμε στο σημείο που είχαμε συνεννοηθεί ότι θα χτυπούσαν οι δικοί μας και θα σκότωναν πρώτο-πρώτο το Φερεντίνο, τον αρχηγό των Ιταλών, εγώ άρχισα να κοντοστέκομαι, για να απομακρυνθώ από αυτόν, μην μού ’ρθει καμία σφαίρα ξώφαλτσα. «Κι αν αστοχούσε ο σκοπευτής μας, που θα σημάδευε το Φερεντίνο», «και αν με καταλάβαινε ο Ιταλός;», έλεγα μέσα μου, κι όσο πλησίαζα τόσο το αίμα μου ανέβαινε στο κεφάλι. Αν το έσκαγα πριν φτάσω στο σημείο που είχαμε συμφωνήσει, θα το καταλάβαιναν και όλα θα πήγαιναν στράφι. «Άγιε Γεώργιε», έλεγα, «βοήθησέ με!…». Όταν πια φτάσαμε στο επίμαχο σημείο, η αγωνία μου ήταν τόσο μεγάλη, που άρχισα να τρέμω. Με κοιτάει ο Βαλεντίνος στα μάτια και σαν να κατάλαβε κάτι. Έβαλε το χέρι στο πιστόλι του, αλλά εκείνη τη στιγμή, που ήταν στραμμένος σε μένα, ο καπετάν Ζαραλής τον πέτυχε στην καρδιά. Τότε χίμηξα στο διπλανό χαντάκι και δεν κατάλαβα πώς βρέθηκα μαζί με τους συντρόφους μου. Οι Ιταλοί τα έχασαν και δεν πρόλαβαν να αμυνθούν και πέφτανε σωρηδόν νεκροί. Ξεχύθηκαν οι κάτοικοι και με τσεκούρια και μαχαίρια χτυπούσαν αλύπητα. Δυο μέρες κράτησε αυτή η μάχη. Ήταν μια μάχη μεταξύ Δαυίδ και Γολιάθ. Εμείς με σφενδόνες και εκείνοι με όπλα και οπλοπολυβόλα.

Αριστείδης Μπλούτσος

Ευτυχώς δε ουδείς εκ των Ιταλών ομήρων έπαθεν ουδέν. Τους αιχμαλώτους υγιείς ή τραυματίας κατευθύναμεν προς το χωρίον και τους συνεκεντριωσαμεν εντός τον σχολείου, όπου τους παρεσχέθη θερμόν ρόφημα, φαγητόν και περίθαλψις υγειονομική εις τους τραυματίας χρησιμοποιηθέντων προς τούτο του Ιατρού και των νοσοκόμων τον τάγματος.

Βασίλης Παπαδήμας

Ο παπάς του χωριού Πούλιος Αθανάσιος βγάζει το πετραχήλι, φιλά ευλαβικά το Ευαγγέλιο, αφήνει το δισκοπότηρο, αρπάζει το ντουφέκι, κάνει την προσευχή του και τρέχει ρασοφορεμένος να προλάβει.Για τούτο οι αιχμάλωτοι Ιταλοί λέγανε: «πολλοί παπάδες παρτιζάνοι αφού υπήρχαν και πολλοί γενειοφόροι».

Στις 11 το πρωί ο Αδαμάντιος που γνώριζε ιταλικά μίλησε στους αιχμάλωτους μαζί με το Μαχιά και τους ανακοινώθηκε πως οι Έλληνες ξέρουν και να τιμωρούν και επειδή γνωρίζουν ότι η μεγαλύτερη τιμωρία είναι να συγχωράς τους αντιπάλους, αυτό κάναμε και εμείς οι αντάρτες ελευθερωτές της πατρίδας μας.Την ίδια μέρα άνδρες των δεκαρχιών συνόδευσαν τους αιχμαλώτους μέχρι το Μουργκάνι για να επιστρέψουν στην Καλαμπάκα.

Στέργιος Γιαννούλας

Επί 39 χρόνια αν έλεγες ότι συμμετείχες σε αυτή τη μάχη εθεωρείσο ότι ήσουν EAMOΒούλγαρος, ανθέλληνας και εναντίον του έθνους.

Μιχάλης Κοσβύρας

Πήγαμε και εμείς από το χωριό μας, περίπου δεκαπέντε νέοι, με ό,τι όπλο μπορούσε ο καθένας να εξοικονομήσει και με μόνο πεντ'-έξι σφαίρες, γιατί τα όπλα δεν ήταν όλα του ιδίου τύπου μαλιχέρ, μαουζέρ κ.ά.
