Επί σαράντα συναπτά έτη αυτή η περίφημη μάχη όχι μόνο δεν γιορτάζονταν αλλά απαγορεύονταν και να συζητιέται γιατί εθεωρείτο ως αριστερή προπαγάνδα, παρόλο που συμμετείχαν και μη αριστερές πολιτικές παρατάξεις όπως το ΕΔΕΣ και το ΜΙΔΑ. Αυτός ήταν ένας σοβαρός λόγος που δεν έχει καταγραφεί στην ιστορική μνήμη των πολιτών της γύρω περιοχής.

Κατά την περίοδο της κατοχής του 1940, η πιο πολυπληθής πολιτική παράταξη στην περιοχή των Χασίων ήταν το ΕΑΜ. Στα χωριά Οξύνεια, Αγναντιά, Σταγιάδες και Κακοπλεύρι ήταν υπεύθυνος ο καπετάν Αδαμάντιος (Ηλίας Καφαντάρης) του οποίου η έδρα ήταν το χωριό Αγναντιά (την περίοδο εκείνη είχε το όνομα Οστροβός, όπως και η σημερινή Οξύνεια είχε το όνομα Μερίτσα εξ ου και η «Μάχη της Μερίτσας»).

Στα χωριά γύρω από το Αγιόφυλλο υπεύθυνος ήταν ο καπετάν Χασιώτης (Νίκος Ζαραλής) πολύ στενός συνεργάτης με τον καπετάν Αδαμάντιο. Ήταν ένας άριστος συνδυασμός διαφορετικών ικανοτήτων. Ο καπετάν Αδαμάντιος πιο εκπαιδευμένος, ευφυής, πολυπράγμων. Ο καπετάν Χασιώτης ένας απλός αγρότης, σκληρός πολεμιστής, γενναίος και κατείχε μονοπάτι προς μονοπάτι όλη την περιοχή του.

Όπως επίσης συμπεραίνεται από τις μαρτυρίες και ιδιαίτερα από τη συνέντευξη του Στέργιου Γιαννούλα, ο Καφαντάρης και ο Ζαραλής απαγόρευσαν τους κατοίκους της περιοχής να στέλνουν φαγώσιμα στους κατακτητές. Μερικοί μάλιστα κάτοικοι ήθελαν να στέλνουν γιατί φοβόταν ότι θα υποστούν αντίποινα της εκδίκησης των Ιταλών. Το γεγονός αυτό αναφέρεται και στα απομνημονεύματα του Αριστείδη Μπλούτσου.

Βέβαια αυτή η πρωτοβουλία του Αδαμάντιου ήταν προσωπική επιλογή και ερχόταν σε αντίθεση με την εντολή που είχε από την κεντρική διοίκηση του ΕΑΜ να μη τα βάζουν με τους κατακτητές μια και γνώριζαν ότι είναι πια θέμα χρόνου η αποχώρησή των. Οι κάτοικοι όμως της περιοχής ήταν αγανακτισμένοι, γιατί οι κατακτητές λεηλατούσαν τα σπίτια τους άρπαζαν αιγοπρόβατα και μοσχάρια από τα κοπάδια τους και βίαζαν και τις γυναίκες τους.

Οι Ιταλοί κατακτητές οι οποίοι είχαν στρατοπεδεύσει στην περιοχή Καλαμπάκας έστελναν φιρμάνια σε όλα τα χωριά των Χασίων ότι αν δεν στείλουν τρόφιμα θα έρθουν στα χωριά και θα κάψουν τα σπίτια τους και θα καταστρέψουν τις περιουσίες τους. Όπως θα δείτε από τις μαρτυρίες αυτών που έγραψαν για τη μάχη της Μερίτσας η απάντηση ήταν "Μολών Λαβέ".

Χαρακτηριστικά γεγονότα:

Αν και η μάχη ήταν πρωτοβουλία του υπευθύνου του ΕΑΜ της περιοχής, η επιχείρηση αυτή έγινε χωρίς την έγκριση του αρχηγείου του ΕΑΜ. (Στα απομνημονεύματα του Δ. Ράπτη αναφέρονται τα παρακάτω σχετικά με αυτό το θέμα «Η ιστορία του Αδαμάντιου μέχρι εδώ. (Μέχρι εδώ εννοεί μέχρι αυτή τη μάχη). Μετά τη νικηφόρο μάχη δεν έδωσε σημάδια ζωής, ούτε το όνομά του ακουγόταν. Λάβαμε διαταγή από το κεντρικά όπου βρεθεί ο Αδαμάντιος ή Καφαντάρης να συλληφθεί. Από 1943 που έγινε η μάχη ανταμώσαμε στις φυλακές Τρικάλων τον Μάρτιο 1948 και έως τον Ιούλιο είμασταν μαζί. Μετά εγώ εξορίσθηκα στο νησί Γιούρα». Σε άλλη παράγραφο «Η Οξύνεια ήταν το πρώτο χωριό της περιφέρειας Καλαμπάκας που υπέστη την πρώτη επιδρομή του κατακτητή, παρά την αντίρρηση του αρχηγείου των Χασίων να μη χτυπηθούν οι Ιταλοί. Ο Αδαμάντιος δεν πειθάρχησε και έφερε τα ωραία αποτελέσματα εκτός των άλλων εφοδιάστηκε το αντάρτικο από οπλισμό και ρούχα κ.τ.λ. Ο Ηλίας Καφαντάρης μετά τη μάχη εξαφανίστηκε γιατί φοβήθηκε ότι θα περνούσε ανταρτοδικείο." Τελικά έγινε λαϊκό δικαστήριο στην έδρα του Καφαντάρη στον Οστροβό όπου καταδικάστηκε σε θάνατο. Γράφει ο Δημήτρης Ράπτης στα απομνημονεύματά του: "Τα πράγματα έπαιρναν διαστάσεις. Ο Παπανικολής και άλλοι παράγοντες σκέφθηκαν να κάμουν Λαϊκό Δικαστήριο και αυτοί να βγουν από μία σοβαρή κατάσταση και κανένας δεν περιμέναμε ότι θα δικαστεί. Το λαϊκό Δικαστήριο αποτελούνταν από ηλικιωμένους ανθρώπους και καλούς. Πρόεδρος ο Δημοδιδάσκαλος Κ.Τζήμας. Εξετάσθηκαν μάρτυρες κατηγορίας. Τον κατηγόρησαν όπως και ο μπακάλης. Το Δικαστήριο το έριξε στο χωριό δια ψήφου. Διότι η ποινή ήταν ή εις θάνατον ή απαλλαγή. Έγινε ψηφοφορία. Εγώ κάθισα μακρά της υποθέσεως, ούτε υπέρ ούτε κατά, ούτε στο δικαστήριο πήγα μέσα. Το Δικαστήριο το έριξε στο χωριό δια ψήφου. Ενθυμούμε καλά ψήφοι 190. Έγινε η καταμέτρηση 120 εις θάνατον και 70 όχι. Πράγμα απίστευτο κανείς δεν το περίμενε, τέτοια απόφαση του χωριού. Βρήκε μια φορά και το χωριό να τον εκδικηθεί. Ο Παπανικολής ξαφνιάστηκε." Βέβαια πρέπει να ληφθεί υπόψη ότι μετά την μάχη φοβούμενοι οι κάτοικοι του χωριού εκδίκηση από τους Ιταλούς εγκατέλειψαν το χωριό και ταλαιπωρήθηκαν επί μέρες στα γύρω βουνά. Προφανώς θεωρούσαν υπεύθυνο τον Καφαντάρη που είχε την πρωτοβουλία να κάνει αυτή τη μάχη (Δείτε μαρτυρίες του Παπα-Κοσβύρα στο βιβλίο του "Από το βουνό στον Άμβωνα).
Σημαντική παρουσία στη μάχη ήταν και ο Αριστείδης ο Μπλούτσος αξιωματικός του διαλελυμένου εθνικού στρατού και υπεύθυνος της οργἀνωσης ΜΙΔΑ. Όπως λέει ο Αριστείδης Μπλούτσος όταν πληροφορήθηκε ότι καταφθάνουν οι Ιταλοί στο χωριό Μερίτσα (Οξύνεια) έδωσε εντολή να φύγουν όλοι οι άνδρες και να μείνουν τα γυναικόπαιδα και οι γέροι.
Ένα άλλο σημαντικό, κατά τη γνώμη μου, στοιχείο, είναι ότι κανείς δεν επιστράτευσε τους κατοίκους των χωριών της γύρω περιοχής. Η συμμετοχή των κατοίκων ήταν αυθόρμητη. Αυτό φαίνεται και από τη μαρτυρία του κ. Β. Παπαδήμα, ότι την ώρα της λειτουργίας ανακοινώθηκε στους κατοίκους του Αγιοφύλλου ότι επρόκειτο εντός ολίγων ωρών να χτυπήσουν οι Ιταλοί και ότι θα λεηλατούσαν το χωριό Μερίτσα (Οξύνεια). Τότε ο Παπαθανάσης διέκοψε τη λειτουργία και είπε στο εκκλησίασμα: "Πάμε να συνεχίσουμε τη λειτουργία πολεμώντας τους κατακτητές".

Από τα παραπάνω συμπεραίνεται ότι στη Μάχη συμετείχαν όλες οι παρατάξεις, αλλά και πολλοί που συμμετείχαν δεν ανήκαν σε καμιά πολιτική παράταξη, όπως ο παπα-Κοσβύρας από την Αγναντιά (δείτε το κείμενό του για τη μάχη στις αυθεντικές αφηγήσεις). Η μάχη αυτή ήταν μια μάχη λαϊκής ενωτικής αντίστασης. Σύμφωνα με τους κανόνες της Πολιτείας για να χαρακτηρισθεί μια μάχη ως εθνική θα πρέπει να έχει οργανωθεί και αποφασισθεί από την Κυβέρνηση και να την έχει πραγματοποιήσει ο εθνικός στρατός και κατά συνέεπια δεν μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί επισήμως τουλάχιστον σε μάχη εθνικής αντίστασης.

Αριστείδης Μπλούτσος

Ευτυχώς δε ουδείς εκ των Ιταλών ομήρων έπαθεν ουδέν. Τους αιχμαλώτους υγιείς ή τραυματίας κατευθύναμεν προς το χωρίον και τους συνεκεντριωσαμεν εντός τον σχολείου, όπου τους παρεσχέθη θερμόν ρόφημα, φαγητόν και περίθαλψις υγειονομική εις τους τραυματίας χρησιμοποιηθέντων προς τούτο του Ιατρού και των νοσοκόμων τον τάγματος.

Βασίλης Παπαδήμας

Ο παπάς του χωριού Πούλιος Αθανάσιος βγάζει το πετραχήλι, φιλά ευλαβικά το Ευαγγέλιο, αφήνει το δισκοπότηρο, αρπάζει το ντουφέκι, κάνει την προσευχή του και τρέχει ρασοφορεμένος να προλάβει.Για τούτο οι αιχμάλωτοι Ιταλοί λέγανε: «πολλοί παπάδες παρτιζάνοι αφού υπήρχαν και πολλοί γενειοφόροι».

Στις 11 το πρωί ο Αδαμάντιος που γνώριζε ιταλικά μίλησε στους αιχμάλωτους μαζί με το Μαχιά και τους ανακοινώθηκε πως οι Έλληνες ξέρουν και να τιμωρούν και επειδή γνωρίζουν ότι η μεγαλύτερη τιμωρία είναι να συγχωράς τους αντιπάλους, αυτό κάναμε και εμείς οι αντάρτες ελευθερωτές της πατρίδας μας.Την ίδια μέρα άνδρες των δεκαρχιών συνόδευσαν τους αιχμαλώτους μέχρι το Μουργκάνι για να επιστρέψουν στην Καλαμπάκα.

Στέργιος Γιαννούλας

Επί 39 χρόνια αν έλεγες ότι συμμετείχες σε αυτή τη μάχη εθεωρείσο ότι ήσουν EAMOΒούλγαρος, ανθέλληνας και εναντίον του έθνους.

Μιχάλης Κοσβύρας

Πήγαμε και εμείς από το χωριό μας, περίπου δεκαπέντε νέοι, με ό,τι όπλο μπορούσε ο καθένας να εξοικονομήσει και με μόνο πεντ'-έξι σφαίρες, γιατί τα όπλα δεν ήταν όλα του ιδίου τύπου μαλιχέρ, μαουζέρ κ.ά.
